Description:

The place: For 26 years Brown Sugar stood on Phrasuman Road, opposite Lumpini Park where it gained worldwide recognition as "one of the best bars of the world" as named by Newsweek in 1997. It has since relocated across the city to Sarasin Road, a short walk across the canal from Khao San Road. Although in a more modern and larger venue, Brown Sugar is maintaining its gritty appeal with low lights and internal neon signs. Brown Sugar plays host to no less than five regular bands including Zao-za-dung, the nine-piece house band. Friday and Saturday nights are packed, while the Sunday evening jam sessions attract a particularly high standard of international musicians and amateur enthusiasts, and a well informed crowd. With the new venue also comes a 200-seat mini auditorium on the second floor. There’s also a new space for art exhibitions, film screenings, theatre productions and concerts.

The crowd: Since relocating Brown Sugar now attracts a slightly younger and more fashionable crowd with plenty of university students and Western backpackers in search of retro sounds.

Food and drink: Brown Sugar is open and busy during the day, serving a large menu of Thai and international cuisine. It’s also known to dish up a particularly tasty goulash. There is also a full drink menu.
