Education Ministry Cracking Down on Bogus Schools
By: Talk Bangkok
The Education Ministry has stepped up its campaign to battle bogus universities which are becoming a problem in the Kingdom, reports the Bangkok Post. The problem came to light after it was discovered that World Peace University was awarding honorary degrees to people who had served the community. The catch was that these honorees had to pay large sums of money to receive the degree, yet World Peace University offered no classes or services other than awarding the pieces of paper.

The Office of the Higher Education Commission is responsible for ensuring that universities have adequate facilities, funds and staff to ensure a high level of quality education services. The university's operations must follow the laws set out in the Private University Act.

In addition to World Peace University, there have been several types of scams that have become popular in Thailand. One type includes foreign universities that open branches in Thailand without observing local law. Another type involves universities that are started locally using the name of a popular university from another country. They then offer honorary degrees in exchange for fees.
